App comparison

Snapchat vs Instagram: which is safer for kids?

Neither app is “safe” or “unsafe” by default — both depend on how they’re set up. Here’s how their built-in risks differ and what to configure on each.

Snapchat

Minimum age 13

Main risks

  • Snaps and Stories are ephemeral, which can reduce a parent's visibility into shared content.
  • Snap Map can share precise location unless Ghost Mode is enabled.

Settings that matter most

  • Switch the account to private so only approved followers see posts.
  • Limit who can send direct messages to existing contacts only.
  • Link the platform's family-pairing / supervision tool to a parent account.
  • Turn off precise location sharing and location tags in posts.

Instagram

Main risks

  • Algorithmic Reels and Explore feeds surface content beyond accounts your child follows.
  • Under-16 accounts default to private under Teen Accounts (verify current rollout).

Settings that matter most

  • Switch the account to private so only approved followers see posts.
