Age guide
What age is Instagram ok for?
Instagram’s minimum age is 13, and Teen Accounts now add private-by-default protections for under-16s. It’s workable from 13 with supervision linked, a private account, and messaging limited to known contacts.
Minimum age
Instagram’s stated minimum age is 13.
Why age matters here
- Minimum age is 13 — below that the app isn’t designed for the user.
- Algorithmic Reels and Explore feeds surface content beyond accounts your child follows.
- Under-16 accounts default to private under Teen Accounts (verify current rollout).
If they do use Instagram — set these

- Remove full name, school, age and identifiable photos from the public profile.
- Set daily screen-time or usage limits.
- Turn off activity status and read receipts.
