App comparison

YouTube vs TikTok: which is safer for kids?

Neither app is “safe” or “unsafe” by default — both depend on how they’re set up. Here’s how their built-in risks differ and what to configure on each.

YouTube

Minimum age 13

Main risks

  • Algorithmic recommendations can surface mature content beyond subscribed channels.
  • A supervised Google account or YouTube Kids is recommended under 13.

Settings that matter most

  • Link the platform's family-pairing / supervision tool to a parent account.
  • Restrict who can comment, or disable comments from non-contacts.
  • Disable livestreaming for the account.
  • Enable restricted mode or the sensitive-content filter.

TikTok

Minimum age 13

Main risks

  • An algorithmic "For You" feed surfaces content beyond accounts your child follows.
  • Livestreaming is restricted to 16+ by TikTok.

Settings that matter most

  • Switch the account to private so only approved followers see posts.
  • Limit who can send direct messages to existing contacts only.
  • Link the platform's family-pairing / supervision tool to a parent account.
  • Turn off precise location sharing and location tags in posts.
