App comparison
Roblox vs Discord: which is safer for kids?
Neither app is “safe” or “unsafe” by default — both depend on how they’re set up. Here’s how their built-in risks differ and what to configure on each.
Roblox
No enforced minimum age
Main risks
- Roblox is a social platform with chat and user-generated experiences, not a single-player game.
- Some experiences contain user-generated content that Roblox has not reviewed.
Settings that matter most
- Switch the account to private so only approved followers see posts.
- Limit who can send direct messages to existing contacts only.
- Link the platform's family-pairing / supervision tool to a parent account.
- Turn off account suggestions and find-by-phone/email so strangers can't discover the account.
Discord
Minimum age 13
Main risks
- Shared servers can place your child in contact with strangers outside their friend list.
- Discord has no public-account model; exposure comes from servers and direct messages.
Settings that matter most
- Limit who can send direct messages to existing contacts only.
- Link the platform's family-pairing / supervision tool to a parent account.
- Disable livestreaming for the account.
- Turn off account suggestions and find-by-phone/email so strangers can't discover the account.
